Textile Material Classification

Fibres – Classification Overview

Textile fibres are the foundational materials used in fabric production. They are categorized based on their origin and structure

Derived from the seed hairs of plants, such as Cotton, known for its softness and breathability.

Extracted from the inner bark of plants. Includes Banana, Ramie, Flax (Linen), Jute, and Hemp—valued for their strength and eco-friendly properties.

A diverse group including Milk, Wool, Apple, and Silk, which come from animal or bio-based sources and offer unique textures and performance qualities.

Yarns – Composition Breakdown

Yarns are continuous strands used to make textiles, and their composition determines texture, strength, and application. They are classified into two main types

Made from pure, unblended fibres such as Cotton, Wool, Silk, and PSF (Polyester Staple Fibre). These offer consistent quality and are commonly used in premium or specialized fabrics.

Incorporate alternative or regenerated fibres like Banana, Flax, Hemp, Jute, Milk, Apple, and even reused Cotton, Wool, and Silk. These blends enhance sustainability, texture variation, and cost efficiency.

Fabrics – Construction & Finishing

Fabrics are created through various construction techniques and finishing processes that define their texture, durability, and appearance

Made by interlacing warp and weft yarns.

  • Plain: Simple crisscross weave, durable and versatile.
  • Twill: Diagonal weave, often used in denim.
  • Satin: Smooth surface with a glossy finish, ideal for luxury wear.

Formed by looping yarns together.

  • Flat Circular: Common in t-shirts and stretch garments.
  • Warp: More stable knit, used in lingerie and sportswear.

Bonded without weaving or knitting.

  • Needle Punch: Mechanically entangled fibres.
  • Chemical Bond: Adhesives used to bind fibres.
  • Thermal Bond: Heat-fused fibres for added strength.

Enhances visual appeal and identity.

  • Yarn Dyed: Colour applied before fabric is woven.
  • Piece Dyed: Fabric dyed after construction.
  • Printed: Patterns applied using various techniques.
  • Embroidered: Decorative stitching for texture and detail.

Made-Ups – Finished Textile Products

Made-ups refer to final textile items crafted from processed fabrics. These are ready-to-use products, often tailored for specific functions or fashion applications

Bedsheet: Large, flat fabric used for bedding, typically made from cotton or blended yarns. Towel: Absorbent fabric, often terry cloth, used for drying or cleaning.

Denim: Durable twill-woven fabric, commonly used in jeans and jackets.

Sinker / Interlock / Rib / Double Jersey / Pique Knit: Various knitted fabric structures used in garments.

  • Sinker: Soft, stretchy knit ideal for casual wear.
  • Interlock: Double-knit fabric with smooth surfaces on both sides.
  • Rib: Stretchy knit with vertical ridges, used in cuffs and collars.
  • Double Jersey: Thick, stable knit with good drape.
  • Pique Knit: Textured knit with raised patterns, often used in polo shirts.
